The answer is: it depends. Although more common now than in any time in recent memory, a shaved hair style is still seen as an extreme statement (this is true to a lesser extent with men). The women who do so are going against the commonly held myth that hair is equated with attractiveness. As a result, choosing to be bald will require a willingness to handle potentially extreme reactions from both close associates (family, friends, co-workers) and total strangers. Also, a shaved head tends to accentuate such features as your eyes, ears, and nose. Hence, you run the risk of realizing just how much your ears stick out or that your nose seems longer than when you had hair. And then, let's face it, hair hides all sorts of bumps, birthmarks, etc., that will now be exposed for all to see. And just like any exposed skin, you will need to be aware of the potential for sun burn if you like outdoors activities.
That said, the advantages are plenty. First, it's very convenient. A few minutes every few days is all it takes to maintain a bald look. You save time on hair care and money on hair care products. And you don't have to pay those exhorbitant prices at hairstylists any more. What's more, you can forget about bad hair days, split ends, and hair in the face on windy days. Whatever your taste in clothes, a shaved head will work out just fine.
If you do go bald, keep the following ideas in mind. First, keep an open mind. In a sense, you are conducting a sort of mini-psychological field experiment. You can learn as much about others and society as you can about yourself in the process. Second, skin protection is a must, so don't forget the sunscreen (if you spend a lot of time outdoors or during the summer) and hats (especially in winter and cold climates). Third, let others in your life know what you are up to. Sure, some of them may wish to talk you out of it, but their reactions are likely to be much more supportive if they know what to expect and know it is something that you want to do. It is also a good idea to set aside plenty of time for that first shave, and preferably have a friend or stylist do the honors. And of course, invest in a good razor and clippers if you decide to remain bald for any length of time.
