What Kind of Woman Would Choose to Shave Her Head?

The philosophy behind this site is very simple. To me it's a meme -- one that hopefully challenges Western conceptualizations of who and what is considered beautiful. Although I have included images of some celebrities (actresses, models, musical performers), my main focus is on those women whom we might encounter in everyday life. They may vary in their reasons for being bald: some shave their heads for charity, others as a fashion statement, and still others have alopecia and have chosen to embrace their baldness. What all of these women prove is that women of all walks of life, of all shapes and sizes, ages, and ethnic backgrounds don't need hair to be attractive.

If I can get visitors to this site to view beauty in a different light, then I have succeeded. By posting some images of attractive bald women, my intention was to present a radically different perspective: you are beautiful and valuable as a human being and the presence or absence of hair is entirely irrelevant. The attitudes that dominate any particular corner of the world are not set in concrete. Over time, a critical mass can change the attitudes that dominate by spreading alternative memes. Our cultural conceptualizations of femininity and attractiveness are nearing a tipping point. Think about that the next time you look in the mirror or are out and about.
